Community Supported Agriculture (CSA): drawing on the Gemüsehof Naderkau and KoLa case studies

Context

Two self-organised, community-led CSA farms in central Germany. Gemüsehof Naderkau is a small rural initiative in Saxony-Anhalt that developed gradually from personal ecological and livelihood motivations; KoLa is a larger cooperative north-east of Leipzig that expanded rapidly and invested heavily in farm, distribution and climate-resilience infrastructure. Both organise production through close producer-member relationships and position ecological, solidarity-based food provision as an alternative to industrial food retail.

Scale

Local to regional. Naderkau had about 47–50 participating households in 2025, while KoLa had about 2,000 members. Their contrasting scales show both incremental small-farm development and large cooperative CSA provision within the Leipzig-Halle region.

Sphere of transformation

Practical: Reorganises food production through shared financing, seasonal ecological farming, soil building, flowering strips, diversified landscapes, local distribution and climate-adaptation measures.

Political: Shifts responsibility and decision-making toward farmers and members through cooperative and self-organised governance; KoLa introduced sociocratic structures, while both cases identify land, subsidy and procurement rules as important system-level levers.

Personal: Builds ecological knowledge and shared responsibility; Naderkau explicitly evolved from personal and affective motivations toward a stronger stewardship and educator identity, while both cases emphasise reconnecting people with how food is produced.

Potential for Amplification

The workshop identified inter-farm networks, shared knowledge and infrastructure, stronger CSA–consumer-cooperative links, public learning, regional procurement and engagement with municipal food-policy and land-policy processes as amplification routes. Wider transformation also depends on land access, subsidy reform and affordable climate-adaptation measures; poorly targeted finance, technology or land rules could favour better-resourced farms. Growth therefore remains constrained by labour, ecological capacity, finance, mobility and the need to retain participatory governance.

TIMs Summary

Across Naderkau and KoLa, the CSA case strongly evidences financial arrangements, information and education, knowledge, biophysical resources, infrastructure, technology and commons-based governance, combining advance member financing with ecological production, farm learning, practical knowledge exchange and investment in climate-resilient farming systems. Social norms are also important through shared responsibility, voluntary engagement, solidarity and non-competitive networking, while the annual bidding round provides a specific choice-architecture mechanism for distributing contributions according to ability to pay. Regulatory tools are evidenced mainly as external constraints and proposed reforms rather than instruments currently controlled by the farms, including permitting, land rules, product standards and procurement; emotional appeal is not explicitly evidenced as a designed intervention in the named sources.

This configuration indicates a primarily practical, relational and distributive transformation pathway, with political transformation depending more heavily on changes beyond the initiatives themselves. Implementation therefore hinges on keeping finance, knowledge, technology and infrastructure accessible to smaller or resource-constrained farms while maintaining member participation and ecological capacity.

Implications for Intervention Mix Design

Broader transformative scope would require alignment between the existing commons-governance, educational, knowledge and ecological tools and external regulatory and financial/market-based conditions around land, subsidies and institutional procurement. Accessible climate-adaptation technology and shared infrastructure would also need to align with farm capacity so that investment does not disproportionately benefit larger or better-capitalised operations. These are conditions identified in the sources as necessary or promising for transition and should not be read as tools already implemented by Naderkau and KoLa.
