As a means of further acknowledging each other’s presence, but also the different starting points and stages of career journey represented by members of this MOOC, for this lesson we invite you to begin working on a Timeline of Change. There are downloadable templates at the bottom of this page to help you.

Begin by thinking about the following: “How did I get here? What is my story?” and more specifically answer the following question:

(1) What are the main tipping points in my personal and professional development that brought me to enroll in this MOOC on care-full scholarship?”

Write down those tipping points in the timeline. You can decide the time frame (e.g. 1 year; 5 years; 10 years) you want to concentrate on, and you can write down key words as signifiers of your ups and downs, your sources of motivations, and the major changes that have affected your pathway;

There are two more levels in the Timeline, and you can choose to fill in those as well:

(2) In parallel to your personal and professional development along the time frame you chose, what are the most important events and processes at local and global level, that you(‘ve) care(d) most about and that affected your life/work?

(3) what communities of practice have you been involved in (if any), during this time frame?

When you have finished your timeline, you may like to upload it to the community pin board below. In any case, take some time to observe what others have written: there is much to learn from each other’s experiences and ways of tracing our pathways.

If social media is your thing, please upload your timeline to your platform of choice and don't forget to tag @Carefullscholar

Meta Reflection: The ‘Timeline of Change’ is a useful exercise, to do both individually and collectively. It urges us to pause for a moment and reflect upon our pathways, developing a deeper awareness of the steps we took, the things that affected us most, and the changes that we consider most crucial.  And it is a great conversation starter when a new group is formed!

We suggest it also as a valuable learning tool that you can use also with others, in your research and practice. To find out more about this tool, check out the RECOMS toolkit’s timeline of change and the Re.imaginary’s timeline of change
