Lesson 1
What Makes Mapping Meaningful?
Insights from PLANET4B workshops suggest that meaningful systems mapping involves:
- A focus on lived experience and emotional resonance, not only structural analysis
- Attention to values, identity and belonging, especially where sustainability intersects with inclusion or equity
- Recognition that power is uneven, and mapping can make this visible
- Emphasis on relationships as levers for change, not just policy
System mapping becomes more than a hypothetical exercise when it opens up conversation, reflection, and possibility - especially for those not usually at the centre of decision-making – it helps to identify priority actions, shared understanding, and practical steps forward.
